Adult dyslexia usually results in some serious impacts on the life of the sufferer. Let us read on further to find out what some of these impacts may be:

Impacts Of Dyslexia On Students

If a student who has dyslexia, may find it very difficult to handle some or all of the following fields:-

•	They may have a very bad memory. They may be in a habit of forgetting things very often.
•	They may not be able to retain things that have been just told to them.
•	They are also usually struggle with time management.
•	As a result of the neurological disorder, they experience great difficulty in taking down notes.
•	Their handwriting can also suffers.
•	Adult dyslexia can result in poor spelling. It can difficult to know what correct grammar or punctuation to use.
•	However, the main area of difficulty lies in reading. Sometimes, they even find it hard to recognize the alphabets. They get confused with similar looking words, such as pot and top. They may even read the word “can” as “akney” and so on.
•	Their perception can also be largely affected due to the problem. For example, when they attempt to read a particular passage, it may seem as if the alphabets were dancing.
•	Concentration can be difficult
•	They can often be restless.

Misconceptions About Dyslexia

There are several misconceptions about adult dyslexia which eventually makes the problem seem much bigger. Most of the times, people do not understand the real problem and they start considering the dyslexic person as dumb and stupid. Because of such behavior, the person loses self-confidence. They start feeling rejected and isolated. However, it is very important to understand that all the negative impacts of dyslexia don’t change that dyslexia doesn’t affect creativity. As per an adult dyslexia test, it has been found that such people can think in pictures and can even present their ideas in the forms of images. They have vivid imagination, which is a considerable strength. If given proper support and encouragement, they can achieve great success.

The latest researches and studies have shown that the brain of a person suffering from adult dyslexia functions differently. The portion of the brain that makes the person able to read and comprehend properly is weakened. However, the good news is that such things can be coped with. The only thing is that the success rate of the treatments depends on how early the problems are diagnosed. That is the reason why these days most schools and colleges have made it mandatory for every student to take a dyslexia test. This helps the management to identify those with dyslexia and provide them with proper support and encouragement.

Adult dyslexia is not a recent discovery. There have been people suffering from such neurological disorder since ages. There is in fact a virtually endless list of people with dyslexia who became famous because of their creative talent. Some of them even became legends. They never let their learning disability stand in the way of their success.

Tom Cruise

Let’s start with the famous Hollywood actor, Tom Cruise. Very few people know that he was also has dyslexia. The dyslexia test show that the problem was most likely because of genetic reasons, as his mother also had dyslexia. Tom has a typical behavior of doing most works with his left hand, but when it comes to writing, he uses his right hand. Tom was never an academic success, but he was a good athlete. He could not do much in his athletic career because of an unfortunate knee injury. But, the world knows how this man who suffered from adult dyslexia does all those stunts in movies and what a great actor he is. His mother encouraged him to utilize his acting talents that he demonstrated in high school in various plays.

Thomas Alva Edison

Thomas Edison who was a brilliant scientist and whose inventions laid the foundation of our modern society was also had dyslexia. He was treated as a dumb student in schools. His skills in mathematics were terrible. Even simple mathematical calculation was like a “Da-Vinci-Code” for him. He also faced severe difficulty with words and speech. But, this same man with adult dyslexia was an avid reader of the latest research. Despite all his disabilities, he was a hard worker. Over the course of his career, he sometimes even worked more than twenty hours a day.

The list of such famous people is virtually endless, as it also includes Leonardo Da Vinci, Sir Winston Churchill, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, John F. Kennedy, Steven Spielberg, George Washington, Mohammad Ali, and Walt Disney.

In the words of Thomas Edison, “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration”. Dyslexia does not cause genius like in these famous people, but it also does not mean that one who is suffering from adult dyslexia do not have the right to study hard and succeed. They need encouragement and support from their teachers and families. Provide encouragement and support that builds. No medicine can do the magic that a few words or an act of affection can.

Adult dyslexia manifests itself in various ways. In most cases, the problems include difficulty in spelling, reading, writing, making calculations, and process information. However, since such problems occur at all levels and the intensity of the problem varies, it may be hard to find whether a person is actually dyslexic or not.

Work Performance And The Problem Of Dyslexia

Like in schools and colleges, unfortunately, people at a workplace are also classified as performers, under-performers and non-performers. In most cases, the person who is not performing well at workplace is considered as stupid, lazy, or careless. However, such persons might be suffering from adult dyslexia and that is the reason why they are not performing well. The problem of dyslexia has direct correlation with work performance. Different severities of dyslexia have different problems. For example, some may experience difficulties with visual processing of information while others with motor integration or with auditory processing. The work performance depends mainly upon the severity of the problems. In most cases, different symptoms coexist in different combinations.

Organizational Psychologist In The Workplace

Now when it is clear that poor performance of the work may not always be the result of laziness or carelessness, it is very important for the management of the organization to have a system that could do the dyslexia test in order to find out if there are employees who are suffering from such problems. The importance of an organizational psychologist in the workplace cannot be ignored. These are expert people who can perform the test for adult dyslexia effectively on your employees in order to find out they have dyslexia. Once employees are identified, the psychologist can work with them in order to enhance their performance.

Recognizing The Strengths

It is very important for you to understand that different variations of dyslexia, despite difficulties with several things, may demonstrate a range of strengths as well. These strengths may include excellent creativity and artistic flair, three-dimensional visual thinking skills, etc. Therefore, the task of the psychologist should not only be to identify the problems, but the strengths as well. This way, they can help the organization to productively use the resources.

The adult dyslexia test is a complex affair, as it has been found that dyslexics usually develop different degrees of compensatory strategies in an attempt to hide their disabilities. For example, they may be rude to you when you talk about something that is difficult for them to understand, such as several numerical sequences.

However, the problem of adult dyslexia should never be a hindrance to employment. Instead, every organization must develop certain strategies to assist those with dyslexia increasing performance effectively in the workplace.

Reading disability in adults is usually a neurological disorder, which is more commonly referred to as adult dyslexia. Such things usually occur because of the different kinds of wiring in the brain. People with dyslexia usually see the things from a different perspective because their brains are programmed to read information differently. However, despite their difficulty in reading, writing and spelling, other strengths can be recognized, particularly creative endeavors.

All Kinds Of Learning Disabilities Are Not Dyslexia Related

Reading disability, as in adult dyslexia, should not be confused with learning “inabilities”. There can be several other reasons as well, such as the following:-

•	Some kind of illness or medical condition
•	Attendance problems – the person may not be attending schools regularly
•	If the problem is associated with reading English, it may be because he or she is learning English as a second language. In fact, when it comes to learning any language other than the native one, it is likely that the learner will inevitably face some or the other reading and comprehending difficulties.

Other Learning Disabilities

There can be different types of learning disabilities and all of them cannot be considered as adult dyslexia.

•	Nonverbal Learning Disabilities – It is a kind of neurological disorder that causes several problems, such as holistic, evaluative, organizational, intuitive, and visual-spatial processing functions.
•	Auditory and Visual Processing Disorders – In this type of learning disability, the person has normal hearing and vision. Still, he or she experiences a great amount of difficulty in understanding the language. These kinds of auditory and visual processing disorders need a variety or treatment.
•	Dysgraphia – It is a kind of writing disability that makes it difficult for the person to write in a particular format. For example, he or she may find difficulty in writing within a defined space or forming letters.
•	Dyscalculia – it is a kind of specific learning disability where the person finds it difficult to solve even the simplest of mathematical problems or understanding different math concepts.

This way, we can see that not every kind of learning disability is dyslexia. There are different types of adult dyslexia tests that can help you distinguish dyslexia from other learning disabilities.

It is important for you to understand that adult dyslexia is a very common phenomenon, as one in seven Americans is suffering from some kind of learning disability. However, it is not something that cannot be cured. Proper attention in time can easily overcome the effects that are caused by adult dyslexia.

Adult dyslexia is not something that cannot be cured. There are several simple tests that can swiftly put the dyslexic people on the track to a better life. There are numerous training courses and therapies that have been very helpful for the dyslexics and they have learned how to deal with their individual problems. It is a simple two-step procedure where you first have to identify the problems and once identified, you just have to go for the relevant dyslexia treatments. Following are five crucial components of a dyslexia test.

Genetic Link

The first component is to find out if you have a family history of dyslexia. If any of your parents, grandparents, or siblings ever suffered from dyslexia, chances are that you are also having some level of such problems.

The Reading Test

The second in the series is a reading test for adult dyslexia, where you try to read numbers or words precisely. If frequent errors are made or stumble through reading, it may be an indication of dyslexia. However, if you can easily read a thousand words per minute with at least 95% accuracy and comprehension, you are probably not dyslexic.

Spelling Difficulties

Spelling is another important component. If you find it hard to spell even the simple short words, it may be taken as a dyslexia sign. Do you confuse between similar looking letters, such as b and d, or M and W?

Comprehension Difficulties

Comprehension ability should also be checked while you are testing adult dyslexia. Do you understand what you read? Do you find it hard to follow instructions with 3 or more procedures?

Direction Confusion

Recognizing direction is also an important component. Do you always confuse the right and left directions with each other?

Difficulty In Math And Sequences

Can you easily conceptualize sequences or understand math lessons? Dyslexics usually find it very difficult to understand numbers in their correct order.

In fact, more than therapies, if anything can effectively cure such problems, it is proper encouragement and support. Once the dyslexia symptoms are identified and given the proper treatment at an early stage, skills can be taught that effectively deal with them. If proper attention is not taken on time, it will only get increasingly difficult to overcome the struggles associated and utilize their considerable strengths. It is very important for you to perform these simple adult dyslexia tests; they can help you discover if a more extensive test is necessary.

Adult dyslexia, especially in students, is undoubtedly a serious problem, but it is not too serious that it needs a cure. However, the key is immediate attention to the problem not only by the sufferers themselves but also by the teachers and families. However, it does not mean that such students should be sent to special school meant for mentally retarded youngsters. It is very important for you to understand that dyslexia is not exactly a mental disorder, but a neurological disorder. Dyslexia typically causes problems only in specific areas, such as reading, writing, spelling, numeric calculations, etc. Mostly, people suffering from adult dyslexia may have exceptional abilities in other fields, such as painting, drawing, and other extra curricular activities. After all, even Albert Einstein had dyslexia, but he never went to a “special” school - and what he did, the world saw.

The Signs And Symptoms

Recognizing such neurological disorder is a very difficult task. Still, there are certain signs and symptoms that can help you identify the problems.

•	The student is always confused between the left and right direction. The best way to perform the test is to ask them to use their left finger and point it to their right foot.
•	Another simple adult dyslexia test is to ask the person to solve some simple mathematical problems. Dyslexia makes it unusually difficult to conceptualize sequences and understand even the simplest of math lessons.
•	Students are usually disorganized, but still there is a limit, and extreme disorganization must not be taken lightly. The disorganization problem in a person suffering from adult dyslexia is much worse than that in a common student.
•	You can also ask them to write what they feel. Sometimes, they understand a particular concept and can even speak about the same, but when they try to write down the same on paper, they get confused.
•	The evaluation of the comprehension ability of the student is another simple test. For example, the teacher may ask the student to repeat the words they just said. If the student has dyslexia they will usually find it hard to retain what is said to them.
•	If a student is unable to understand instructions involving multiple sequences, such things also indicate that there is some kind of neurological disorder. Students with adult dyslexia usually face difficulties in performing even a simple operation that involves three or more procedures.

The objective to identify the above dyslexia symptoms must be to understand the problem and then develop the various specialized strategies in order to provide such students an opportunity to improve their learning experiences and showcase their skills.

Adult dyslexia is usually described as a neurological learning disorder that is primarily associated with written language – in particular, with reading and spelling. These types of problems can also occur because of deficiency with vision or hearing, however those things are non-neurological. Dyslexia is different. People with this kind of problem may find it difficult to process information and correlate the written symbol with the spoken sound. Other areas of difficulty in people with dyslexia may include time keeping, speed and distance, personal organization, and numeric calculations.

The Range And Severity Of The Problem

The dyslexia symptoms may be almost similar in all dyslexic people, but the range and severity of the problem may greatly vary. For example, some only suffer from mild spelling difficulties while there are also people suffering from adult dyslexia who are severely affected with organizational problems and even complete literacy. However, no matter what is the intensity of the problem, it is very important for you to understand that dyslexia does not make people dumb or stupid. Most of the times, people confuse this problem with intellectual disability, which is not true. People with dyslexia can work and progress just as one can to have exceptional abilities. In fact, such problems may occur at all levels of intelligence. The person may be highly gifted, above average, average, sub-average. The dyslexia doesn’t define the person.

How To Find If A Person Is Suffering From Dyslexia

There is no medical test (i.e. blood test, CAT scan, MRI, etc.) that could find out if a person is suffering from adult dyslexia. However, there are certain symptoms that may help you identify the problem. But again, all of these symptoms may not necessarily be found in every case, as I said earlier the intensity of the problem varies.

•	Poor spelling, poor punctuation, and poor presentation of written work
•	The person may have the idea, but he or she may not be able to speak that or present the same in written format
•	Difficulty with note-taking
•	Difficulty with sequences, such as they may find it difficult to find page 62, para 4, line 6
•	Confusion between the similar looking alphabets, such as M and W, b and d, etc.
•	Difficulty with time-management

Overall, a dyslexia test is all about identifying the above symptoms in a person in order to find out if he or she is suffering from such problems. Take the time to take the test and it may open up doors previously closed.

Dyslexia in adults is particularly hard because often the individual who has dyslexia tries to hide it or mask it from society. They are afraid of what might happen to their social situation, job status and reputation if they are discovered. There are many facets to dyslexia that cause a variety of issues in daily life. They are not issues that will stop daily life but just create frustration. Some symptoms are harder to deal with then other but understanding and recognizing them is the first step in succeeding despite them.

Getting tested for adult dyslexia is good idea if you at all feel that you may be suffering. The untreated symptoms could be altering your quality of life. When the symptoms and issues present are recognized a tactic can be developed to curb its effects. Watch for some of the following common effects that dyslexia can have, and try a few of these ideas to manage their effects.

Keeping track of time spent on tasks can be very difficult for an individual with dyslexia. This isn’t an excuse for those who spend time poorly but if you know you have dyslexia it is something you can watch out for and recognize. Some simple ideas to aid in time management is to keep a planner, set goals with specific times for you to meet those goals and then keep a clock on your desk to track your progress by.

Some days are just so full that it can be particularly hard for some adults with dyslexia to keep the priorities of a day in proper order. A quick idea is to set aside 10 minutes a day to just organize and make a list of what has to be done to today and what can wait until later. Use colored pens to make your list (red means urgent, blue means it’s less important) or make two separate columns on your list. Then carry your list in your pocket so that you can reference it through out the day.

Information that is spoken can be especially hard to remember because dyslexia has a tendency to scramble things up in your mind. A solution to try is to take notes as people speak, or as your boss for an outline of the meeting. You could also be creative in the way you take your notes: draw key points or make a mind-map/ flow chart of the information so that they proper order of the information is record too.

Adult dyslexia isn’t a disease that will stop you from living a fulfilling life but it will take some work to overcome. Try these few simple ideas and learn your own individual ways dyslexia is affecting your life and make a game plan to curb its effects. If you think at all that you might be suffering take an adult dyslexia test and it will help you determine both whether or not you have it and to how severe it may or may not be.

Dyslexia is a learning disability, the exact effects vary from person to person, though the overall idea of struggling with learning is the same. It is a life long disease meaning children that are diagnosed will continue to have dyslexia in there adulthood. Many people don’t discover it until they are adults, through a dyslexia test. The exact cause of dyslexia is not certain but but here are the various theories:

Neurobiological and Genetic- Some believe that dyslexia is inherited through genetics. If a person has dyslexia then chances are their parents, grandparents, or aunt etc. had dyslexia.

Brain Development- Some researchers believe that dyslexia is the result of improper neuronal migration. Neurons, nerve cells that form the brain, develop away from where they actually need to be. This failure to migrate causes the brain to not develop fully.

Early Age Hearing Problems- Other researchers believe that if there is a problem with hearing at an early age a child will not be able to hear correctly how letters are supposed to sound causing the brain (which is at a crucial developing stage) to fail to make the connections between letters and their correct sound. This lack of letter recognition can be a life long struggle.

Crossed Wiring- There are studies that suggest that a child with dyslexia will use the right side of their brain for language work where a child without dyslexia will use the left side. The right side of the brain is not the side that is made to comprehend language, suggesting that some where those wires got crossed. This dependence on the right side of the brain makes a person with dyslexia have to work twice as hard to comprehend language.

A Combination- The majority of people believe it is or can be a combination of all of the above reasons. With no known scientific cause or explanation, many say this is probably the most likely answer.

Knowing the cause of dyslexia is not essential to understanding how to deal with it. Although finding the origin may lead to its prevention and/or cure, not knowing the cause doesn’t hinder the coping process. It will be an exciting breakthrough when science can explain the mystery of dyslexia. If you at all suspect you have dyslexia you should take the time to get tested, so you can begin learning the proper coping skills.
